Before the decision: Understanding the health journeys hidden in digital conversations

October 14, 2026

Some of the most important decisions people make no longer begin with a professional consultation. They begin much earlier, through weeks or months of observing other people's experiences, asking questions, comparing stories, and working through uncertainty online.

For insight and communications teams, this creates a new opportunity and a new challenge. Traditional approaches often measure what people are talking about, but reveal far less about how decisions actually happen. The moments that build confidence, create hesitation, or change someone's mind are easily lost when conversation is reduced to keywords, mentions, or sentiment scores.

This session explores how social intelligence can move beyond measuring conversation to reconstructing decision journeys. Using two high-stakes health categories, fertility treatment and GLP-1 weight-loss medication, DIG will examine how digital conversations reveal the questions, fears, turning points, and motivations that shape people's decisions long before they engage with a healthcare professional.

After this session, you'll be able to:

  • Understand how complex health decisions unfold across digital conversations, rather than through isolated moments of feedback.
  • Identify the questions, concerns, and turning points that shape health decisions before people engage with healthcare professionals.
  • Learn how to move beyond mentions and sentiment to interpret the motivations driving patient behaviour.
  • Develop a framework for mapping health decision journeys that can inform communications, patient engagement, and reputation strategy.
  • Recognise where traditional social listening methods may overlook critical signals within digital conversations.
